Exploring Chandigarh's Essence Through Photography
How do the residents of Chandigarh perceive their city? In a rapidly evolving urban landscape, daily life is a continuous flow, and this time, locals have documented their experiences using mobile photography. The Art, Ink and Musing (AIM) Gallery has invited the community to showcase their vision of Chandigarh, transforming ordinary snapshots into a stunning collective representation that reflects the city's unique character.
Often, we overlook the vibrancy of everyday life in various parts of the city. We encounter numerous individuals and moments daily without taking a moment to appreciate them. However, photography compels us to pause and observe anew. This exhibition transcends the well-known landmarks and architecture of Chandigarh, focusing instead on the individuals who contribute to the city's daily rhythm, ensuring they are not forgotten.
Every photograph tells a story, often carrying unseen burdens. From an elderly man engrossed in his newspaper to a college corridor buzzing with youthful energy, and an ice-cream vendor seeking shade from the sun, these images encapsulate the essence of life in Chandigarh. Some photographs depict residents seeking tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle, as they strive to make a living while navigating the city's relentless pace and traffic.
One striking image portrays a girl in a women's college, capturing a moment that, while seemingly mundane, speaks volumes about youth, freedom, and the simple joys of life. Collectively, these photographs illustrate that a city is not merely defined by its structures and monuments; it is also shaped by the people who rise, work, relax, dream, and find joy within its confines.
Twinkle Sharma, a participant in the exhibition, chose to photograph Kiran Theatre, one of Chandigarh's historic venues. She explains, "I captured Kiran Theatre under the theme 'Ruk Jana Nahin'. This theatre holds a cherished place in the hearts of Chandigarh's residents. Even after its closure, there remains a hope for its revival. My photograph aims to convey the desire to preserve a location that embodies the city's memories and to continue its narrative rather than allowing it to fade away." Each image serves as a dialogue between what endures and what has faded.
Munish Jauhar, the founder of AIM Gallery, shares, "This marks the second edition of our exhibition. We invited submissions from Chandigarh's residents and received nearly 1,000 photographs, from which the jury selected 100 for display. Most contributors are amateur photographers. We encouraged residents to share their perspectives of the city through their lenses, aiming for a diverse representation that showcases Chandigarh through the eyes of its people, rather than just its landmarks."
The exhibition is open until September 13, from 11 am to 8 pm at CLKA Gallery, located at the Underpass Sector-17, connecting to Rose Garden, Chandigarh.
