Celebrating the Life of Fauja Singh: The Turbaned Tornado of Marathons
A Remarkable Journey of Resilience
On December 1 of the previous year, I had my last encounter with the remarkable centenarian, Fauja Singh, who, despite his age, radiated youthful energy.
At 114 years old, he defied the limitations of age, showcasing remarkable fitness and health.
Fauja embraced the spotlight, relishing the attention and, notably, the food. He maintained a simple diet, which he credited for his vitality. However, when it came to his requests, Gurpreet, the organizer of the 'One Race' marathons, ensured that his needs were met, adhering to a strict regimen regarding the quantity, quality, and timing of his meals.
Interestingly, he was frail as a child, only beginning to walk at five years old, and underwent treatment to strengthen his legs. He believed that this strength was preserved by a higher power for his later years, as he took up marathon running at the age of 89.
After his family migrated from the Doaba region of Punjab to the UK, Fauja was initially reluctant to leave his homeland. However, following the loss of his wife, son, and daughter, he moved to the UK with his family.
Adjusting to life in a new country was challenging for him until a friend encouraged him to participate in a charity run. Although he found the 20-km distance daunting, he realized that he needed to run even further to complete a marathon. Undeterred, he decided to hire a coach and committed to training harder.
On his first day of coaching, he arrived in a three-piece suit, but eventually adapted to running gear while proudly keeping his turban. This led to his nickname, the Turbaned Tornado, as he completed his first London Marathon at the age of 89 in 2000.
Fauja's vibrant personality was reflected in his love for colorful attire, often coordinating his suit, tie, and turban.
As a centenarian, he expressed concern over the fitness levels of elderly individuals in India, particularly women. He often remarked, “Look at the elderly women here; they neglect their health. Compare them to the fit and beautiful English ladies.”
Once, when an octogenarian runner was invited to an event, he refused to pose for a photo with her, stating, “I will not stand next to this old lady.” Yet, he was always eager to take selfies with fit young women.
Fauja Singh inspired countless individuals globally, but his life was tragically cut short due to a hit-and-run accident. His journey reminds us to embrace life fully, embodying the spirit of the Fauja way.
