Navratri Day 5: Worship of Maa Skandmata

On the fifth day of Navratri, devotees honor the fifth form of Goddess Durga, known as *Maa Skandmata*. This day is significant for spiritual seekers as it aligns their focus with the *Vishuddha Chakra* or Throat Chakra. Maa Skandmata is revered as the mother of Lord Skanda, also referred to as Kumar Kartikeya, who led the divine army during the legendary *Devasura Sangram*, the battle between gods and demons. His valor is celebrated in the Puranas, where he is depicted as *Kumar* (the Youth) and *Shaktidhar* (the Bearer of Power), with a peacock as his divine vehicle.

The Divine Representation of Skandmata

In the iconography of Skandmata, she is portrayed with Lord Skanda as a child in her lap. The scriptures describe her as riding a lion and possessing four arms. In her upper right arm, she cradles the child Kartikeya, while her lower right arm holds a lotus. Her upper left arm is in the *Varada Mudra*, symbolizing the granting of boons, and her lower left arm also holds a lotus. Her complexion is depicted as pure white, and she is seated on a lotus pedestal, earning her the title *Padmasana Devi*.
