Worshipping Goddess Brahmacharini on Navratri

The sacred festival of Shardiya Navratri is currently being celebrated, and on the second day, which falls on October 12th, devotees honor Goddess Brahmacharini. This form of Maa Durga symbolizes simplicity and asceticism. It is believed that she has a special affinity for white items and milk-based sweets.

Offering Makhana Kheer to the Goddess

To receive the blessings of the Goddess, you can prepare a delightful dish known as 'Makhana Kheer' (fox nut pudding). This dish is not only tasty but also provides significant energy during fasting. Here’s a simple recipe to create Makhana Kheer for the Goddess.

**Ingredients for Makhana Kheer**
Makhana (Fox nuts/Lotus seeds) – 1 to 2 cups
Full-cream milk – ½ liter
Desi Ghee (Clarified butter) – 1 tablespoon
Sugar or Mishri (Rock sugar) – 3–4 tablespoons
Green cardamom powder – ½ teaspoon
Chopped dry fruits (cashews, almonds, pistachios, and raisins) – 2 tablespoons

Step-by-Step Preparation of Makhana Kheer

**Preparation Method**
Begin by heating a heavy-bottomed pan or *kadhai* and adding 1 tablespoon of desi ghee. Once the ghee is hot, add the makhana and roast them on low heat for about 3–4 minutes until they are crisp.

After roasting, allow half of the makhana to cool and then coarsely grind them using a mixer or rolling pin, leaving the other half whole. This technique will give the kheer a rich, creamy texture similar to *rabri*.

Next, pour the milk into a deep pot and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, lower the heat.

Add both the whole and coarsely ground roasted makhana to the boiling milk. Stir well and let it simmer on low heat for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid sticking.

When the milk thickens and the makhana softens, add sugar or rock sugar (mishri) to taste, along with the cardamom powder and chopped dry fruits.

After mixing, cook for an additional 2 minutes to ensure the sugar dissolves completely. Turn off the heat, and your delicious Makhana Kheer is ready!

Serve the kheer in a beautiful bowl, garnished with additional chopped dry fruits. Present this Makhana Kheer to Goddess Brahmacharini with reverence during the puja, and share it as *prasad* with your family.
