Inspired by trailblazers like Jane Campion and Mira Nair, Hughes hopes that future generations will find gender representation in directing to be a non-issue. “From what I observe on my sets today, that change is already underway,” she adds.

Hughes believes that we are currently living in a 'global village' where stories from various cultures are easily accessible. “Streaming platforms have transformed the landscape, allowing us to explore diverse lives and cultures from anywhere in the world. This is the true evolution of storytelling,” she explains.

This evolution inspired her latest film, which centers around an Indian wedding—a theme she previously touched upon in Forces of Nature. “I wanted to portray the myriad forms of happiness that exist, which are often unexpected. While I received numerous rom-com offers afterward, they lacked a contemporary perspective on women's self-fulfillment,” Hughes shares.

Beyond Traditional Narratives

However, Hughes emphasizes that her film transcends typical genre boundaries. “It delves into deeper themes beyond marriage, addressing the timeless quest for self-improvement,” she notes.

She elaborates, “This narrative is modern and progressive, often exploring unconventional paths to happiness.”

Immersed in Indian Culture

Hughes's exploration of the genre is deeply rooted in the vibrant settings of Indian weddings and contemporary Indian cities. She and her team have been actively participating in local wedding festivities, gaining firsthand experience. “Indian weddings are a treasure trove for cinema,” she exclaims. “The colors, textures, and sounds are unparalleled. The creativity surrounding these celebrations is boundless, and I learn something new every day. Even our local crew engages in lively discussions about which ceremonies to portray. It’s incredible!”

After visiting several palaces, Hughes remains in awe. “Six of them were preparing for weddings! It feels like the universe is inviting me to absorb it all.”

Crafting Humor with Cultural Sensitivity

With her unique blend of humor and sensitivity, Hughes is reimagining romantic comedy for an Indian audience. “We’re not imitating Western styles. We’re honoring these characters and their cultural realities. When you do that, the humor flows naturally. Love, awkwardness, and joy are universal emotions,” she explains.

Regarding her Indian collaborators, she expresses admiration: “They seem to anticipate my preferences before I even voice them. Their recommendations for casting and locations are exceptional.”

A Dynamic Collaboration

Hughes praises her co-producer, Preeti Singh, calling her “pure fire” and “a creative partner.” “She ensures we strive for excellence at every turn,” Hughes states.

On the culinary front, Hughes has become adept at navigating Indian vegetarian cuisine. “I enjoy Indian food four times a week. And yes, I’ve been singing Hindi songs to the crew, which has been quite entertaining!”

Understanding Actors and Evolving Styles

Having directed a range of actors from Sandra Bullock to Bryan Cranston, Hughes attributes her success to understanding the psychology of performers. “Actors thrive when you comprehend their needs. It’s essential to create an environment where they can excel. This applies to all creatives on the team. I aim to inspire the best from everyone involved,” she shares.

Her directing approach is continually evolving. “Each film requires a distinct visual, emotional, and structural language. I strive to avoid becoming stagnant in my perspective,” she explains.

Reflecting on her past, Hughes believes there’s much to learn from her younger self. “My younger self was a more fearless director, unaware of limitations, which made everything seem achievable. I strive to maintain that spirit and not suppress my ideas. Hard work is part of our passion,” she asserts.

While she remains tight-lipped about her next project, Hughes hints at future narratives that will prominently feature music and dance. “Let’s just say they will play a significant role,” she teases.
