Beat the Summer Heat with Homemade Gulkand: A Refreshing Remedy

Stay Cool This Summer with Gulkand

As summer approaches, the intense heat and excessive sweating can be quite uncomfortable. Many of us turn to ice-cold beverages or chilled sodas for relief, but these can actually harm our bodies internally. So, what’s the traditional remedy to combat the sweltering summer heat? The answer lies in Gulkand.

Gulkand, crafted from fresh rose petals, is not only a sweet treat but also a powerful health booster. In Ayurveda, it is celebrated as a remarkable "cooling tonic."

A Natural Solution for Summer Stomach Issues
One of the primary advantages of Gulkand during the hot months is its effectiveness in alleviating various gastric problems, including gas, acidity, heartburn, and indigestion. Additionally, if you often experience mouth ulcers due to heat, nosebleeds, or fatigue, Gulkand can serve as a reliable remedy.

While you may have tried store-bought Gulkand, the unique taste and health benefits of homemade Gulkand are unparalleled. Let’s explore the simple steps to make it at home.

Ingredients Needed for Gulkand
Fresh petals of *Desi* (Indian) roses: 250 grams
Threaded Rock Sugar (*Mishri*): 250 grams (powdered)
Fennel Seed Powder (*Saunf*): 1 teaspoon
Green Cardamom Powder (*Choti Elaichi*): ½ teaspoon
One clean glass jar

Steps to Prepare Gulkand
Begin by washing the fresh rose petals thoroughly. Spread them on a clean cotton cloth and allow them to dry under a fan until all moisture is gone.

Next, place the dried petals in a large mixing bowl. Add the powdered rock sugar, fennel powder, and cardamom powder, mixing everything well with your hands. You can also gently crush the petals if desired.

Transfer the mixture into a clean, dry glass jar, ensuring it is completely moisture-free to prevent spoilage.
Seal the jar tightly and place it in direct sunlight—on your rooftop or balcony—for 10 to 15 days.

Every couple of days, open the jar and stir the Gulkand with a clean, dry spoon, mixing it thoroughly.
In about two weeks, the rock sugar will dissolve completely, and the rose petals will soften, merging into a sweet syrup. Your delicious and pure Gulkand will be ready!

You can enjoy a spoonful of Gulkand daily—either on an empty stomach in the morning or before bedtime—with a glass of cold milk or plain water. It’s a beneficial treat for both children and adults alike.
