Google has unveiled the second beta version of Android 17, following the initial beta release just two weeks prior. This latest update marks a significant shift in the company's development strategy, emphasizing a new API framework, enhanced cross-device functionalities, and improved connectivity.
What's New in Android 17 Beta 2?
Bubbles Feature: The new Bubbles feature allows users to create floating windows for apps on smartphones, tablets, and foldable devices. By long-pressing an app, users can generate a bubble, which can be managed through a bubble bar on larger screens.
EyeDropper API: This innovative feature enables users to pick a color from any pixel displayed on their screen.
Contacts Picker: This tool will facilitate access across both personal and work profiles, providing temporary and session-based permissions based on the READ_CONTACTS access.
Cross-Device and Connectivity Enhancements: Android 17 introduces the Cross-Device Handoff API, allowing users to continue tasks seamlessly across devices, such as moving from a phone to a tablet. The CompanionDeviceManager will support transitions between apps and web services.
Additionally, the Ultra-Wideband DL-TDOA feature will enhance privacy-focused indoor navigation, leveraging FiRa 4.0 technology. Streaming applications will benefit from access to carrier-allocated bandwidth, optimizing their performance.
Improved OTP Protection: Enhancements have also been made to OTP security, with delays of up to three hours for OTPs sent to apps that are not designated message recipients. This applies to WebOTP messages, SMS Retriever format messages, and standard OTP SMS.
Pixel users who are part of the Android Beta program can receive this update via an OTA update, while non-Pixel users can utilize the 64-bit emulator in Android Studio. Google aims to finalize the SDK and NDK APIs by March.
