Legal Action Against Noreen Niazi

Lahore: The anti-cybercrime agency in Pakistan has summoned Noreen Niazi, the sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, for allegedly spreading "false, offensive, and inflammatory" content on social media aimed at discrediting state institutions and promoting misleading narratives.

This legal action follows the viral circulation of an interview where Niazi suggested that the military confrontation between India and Pakistan in May 2025 was a result of a conspiracy involving Pakistan's military leaders and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, intended to bolster the military's public image.

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency issued the summons on Saturday, instructing Niazi to report to their Islamabad office on Monday.

The notice stated, "You have been found to have disseminated false, offensive and inflammatory social media content to defame state institutions and spread fake narratives."

In her interview, Niazi criticized the Pakistani military's response during the four-day conflict last year, which was ignited by a terror attack in Pahalgam.

She claimed, without evidence, that India chose not to escalate the situation because Pakistan was moving towards recognizing Israel, suggesting that the conflict was orchestrated to facilitate Pakistan's entry into the Abraham Accords.

Pakistan is one of the nations that does not recognize Israel and lacks diplomatic relations with it. The Abraham Accords are a series of agreements brokered by the US that established diplomatic ties between Israel and several Arab countries, including the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco.

Niazi questioned, "Do you think India, a large country, was unable to respond to Pakistan's actions on May 10?" She implied that India deliberately held back from a strong response due to some underlying agreement.

Her comments drew sharp criticism from Azma Bokhari, the Punjab Minister for Information and Culture, who is affiliated with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Bokhari stated, "Noreen Niazi's statement reflects her brother Imran Khan's mindset. The Khan family has consistently shown discomfort with Pakistan's achievements, and remarks against national interests are regrettable," adding that Niazi's support for PM Modi is "highly condemnable."
