London: On Wednesday, P Kumaran officially took on the role of India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
A member of the Indian Foreign Service since 1992, Kumaran previously held the position of Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs. He takes over from Vikram Doraiswami, who has recently been appointed as India’s Ambassador to China.
The High Commission of India in London expressed a warm welcome to Kumaran via social media, stating, 'We look forward to working under his leadership and guidance to further strengthen the India-UK partnership.'
Upon his arrival, Kumaran was greeted by Deputy High Commissioner Kartik Pande and Gordon Wetherell CMG, who serves as the Special Representative of UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.
Kumaran is proficient in several languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil, and Arabic, and has previously served as India’s Ambassador to Qatar and as High Commissioner to Singapore.
His official tenure in the UK will begin once he presents his credentials to King Charles III in a traditional ceremony anticipated in the upcoming weeks.
This ceremony will involve the presentation of his Letter of Commission, a formal document from President Droupadi Murmu, requesting the British monarch to recognize the new High Commissioner.
