Who is Mojtaba Khamenei? Iran's New Supreme Leader Amidst Turmoil
Mojtaba Khamenei Takes the Helm as Iran's Supreme Leader
Tehran: Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been appointed as the new Supreme Leader of Iran by the Assembly of Experts, as per recent media reports.
According to Iran International, sources indicate that Mojtaba has been chosen to assume the country's highest leadership role.
At 56 years old, he is recognized as the second-eldest son of Ali Khamenei and has long been viewed as a potential successor within Iran's clerical hierarchy.
His ascension to this pivotal position comes shortly after his father's death, which occurred during a series of US-Israeli military strikes that have escalated tensions in the Middle East.
The Islamic Republic has historically positioned itself against hereditary monarchy, openly criticizing dynastic governance. Thus, a transition from father to son may raise concerns regarding the regime's commitment to its foundational principles.
Reports suggest that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) played a significant role in influencing the clerical assembly to endorse Mojtaba's leadership.
"The IRGC applied substantial pressure on the clerics to select Mojtaba as the new leader of the regime," the outlet stated.
The Supreme Leader holds the highest authority in Iran's complex power structure, overseeing state affairs, serving as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and managing the influential Revolutionary Guard, which was labeled a terrorist organization by the United States in 2019.
Under Ali Khamenei's leadership, the Revolutionary Guard expanded its influence across Iran's political, military, and economic sectors.
Mojtaba is known to have strong connections with the Revolutionary Guard and is believed to wield significant influence behind the scenes.
He has effectively managed the Office of the Supreme Leader and is regarded as a key power broker within Iran's governance.
Described as a mid-ranking cleric, Mojtaba served in Iran's armed forces during the Iran-Iraq war and has maintained robust ties with the IRGC, solidifying his position within the nation's power dynamics.
