Who is Masud Uddin Chowdhury? The General Behind Bangladesh's 2007 Political Shift Arrested!
Arrest of a Key Figure in Bangladesh's Political History
Dhaka: A prominent former military general, who was pivotal in the establishment of an army-backed interim government in 2007, has been apprehended, according to police reports on Tuesday.
Retired Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury, who played a significant role in the political upheaval that led to the interim government, was taken into custody by plainclothes officers at his residence in Baridhara, Dhaka.
The police confirmed that Chowdhury's arrest is linked to five separate cases filed against him, although the specific charges have not been disclosed, as stated by Shafiqul Isam, the head of the detective branch.
Following his military career, Chowdhury served as Bangladesh's ambassador to Australia and later became a member of parliament representing the Jatiya Party.
The Jatiya Party had previously allied with the now-disbanded Awami League, which secured a two-thirds majority in the December 2008 elections.
The military-backed interim government, which emerged from a covert army coup known as 1/11, aimed to implement a 'minus two formula' to eliminate two prominent leaders from the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), namely Sheikh Hasina and her rival Khaleda Zia.
During the interim government's nearly two-year tenure, current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was also arrested, reportedly tortured, and faced multiple criminal and corruption allegations.
Chowdhury was the coordinator of the National Coordination Committee on Serious Crimes, which oversaw anti-corruption initiatives.
Rahman was eventually exiled to the UK for 17 years, returning home shortly before his mother Zia's death last December.
After Zia's passing, the BNP appointed Rahman to lead the party, which subsequently won a significant victory in the February 12 elections.
In a previous interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, a court ruling last July mandated the seizure of Chowdhury's movable assets.
Chowdhury's arrest coincides with the exile of former army chief General Moyeen U Ahmed in the United States, alongside at least two other influential military figures residing abroad.
