Who Are the New Leaders of the Nepali Congress? Meet Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma!
New Leadership in Nepali Congress
Kathmandu: Gagan Kumar Thapa has been officially elected as the president of the Nepali Congress, while Bishwa Prakash Sharma has taken the role of senior vice-president without opposition. This leadership transition solidifies the party's direction under these two prominent figures.
Thapa, aged 50, secured the presidency with a total of 6,584 votes during the party's 15th general convention held on Friday.
As reported by Election Committee Coordinator Prem Bahadur Khadka, Thapa's rival, Shyam Krishna Khadgi, received only 375 votes.
Kishor Singh Rathore, who had also intended to run against Thapa, ultimately withdrew his nomination. Sharma was the only candidate for the senior vice-president position, and Pushpa Bhusal was the sole nominee for women's vice-president, both being elected unopposed.
In December 2021, prior to the Congress's 14th general convention, the late leader Pradip Giri likened Thapa and Sharma to a pair of oxen, emphasizing their potential to drive the party forward together.
Giri remarked on their youthfulness in both spirit and qualifications, suggesting that just as oxen are yoked to cultivate land, these two should advance the Congress agenda.
Now, five years later, Giri's analogy has manifested politically, with Thapa as the party president and Sharma as his deputy.
Out of 7,013 delegates at the general convention, 54 votes were deemed invalid, and the convention will establish a 232-member central executive committee for the party.
