What’s on the Agenda? Indian Vice President's Historic Visit to Sri Lanka
Strengthening Ties: A Historic Meeting
Colombo: On Sunday, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan engaged in discussions with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, emphasizing the need to enhance bilateral relations, particularly focusing on cultural and social connections.
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that Prime Minister Amarasuriya welcomed Vice President Radhakrishnan during his visit to Sri Lanka.
The leaders reflected on the shared cultural heritage of both nations and highlighted the significance of fostering stronger ties, including enhancing people-to-people interactions.
Earlier that day, Radhakrishnan also met with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, where they discussed ways to bolster cultural and bilateral relations.
During this meeting, Radhakrishnan reiterated India's dedication to its Neighbourhood policy.
Jaiswal shared on X, "Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan met with President Dissanayake, engaging in fruitful discussions aimed at deepening the multifaceted ties between India and Sri Lanka, which are rooted in shared history and cultural values."
He further emphasized India's commitment to the Neighbourhood First policy, aiming to enhance cooperation for mutual benefit. The talks also covered various initiatives, including the Indian Housing Project and efforts under the USD 450 million package for regions impacted by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka.
Radhakrishnan's arrival in Colombo marks the beginning of a two-day official visit, highlighting the increasing diplomatic engagement between the two neighboring countries.
Upon his arrival, he received a warm welcome, complete with a traditional Kandyan dance performance.
This visit is particularly significant as it marks the first official bilateral trip by an Indian Vice President to Sri Lanka, focusing on reinforcing civilizational and interpersonal connections.
His itinerary includes meetings with leaders from the Indian-origin Tamil community and Tamil representatives from the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka.
Additionally, he will address the Indian diaspora at a community event in Colombo, where he will virtually hand over homes to beneficiaries from Tamil communities, constructed under the third phase of the Indian Housing Project. This initiative will bring the total number of houses built for Tamil communities to 50,000, with another 10,000 currently under development in the fourth phase.
On Monday, Radhakrishnan plans to visit Nuwara Eliya, where he will tour project sites and engage with the local Tamil community. The Indian-origin Tamil population in Sri Lanka is approximately 1.6 million, accounting for around 7 percent of the total population.
This visit follows a series of high-level exchanges between the two nations, including President Dissanayake's visit to India in February and Prime Minister Amarasuriya's trip in October 2025, and is expected to further strengthen the long-standing civilizational and interpersonal ties between India and Sri Lanka.
