Trump and Zelenskyy Meet Amid Ongoing Tensions
Washington: On Tuesday, President Donald Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the White House for their second meeting this month, coinciding with the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham. This meeting follows a notable shift in perspective from a far-right activist close to Trump regarding Russia's actions in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy is in Washington to pay tribute to Graham, who recently visited Kyiv and helped secure a sanctions package aimed at penalizing nations that import Russian oil and gas.
Upon his arrival, Zelenskyy emphasized that his top priority is enhancing "anti-ballistic defense and strategic cooperation with America." He stated, "We need to bring peace closer," as he entered the White House. A source familiar with the meeting indicated that Trump intends to discuss the ongoing peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
In a Fox News interview, Trump reflected on Graham's unwavering support for Ukraine, contrasting it with Graham's suggestions for negotiating with Iran. "Lindsey was very militant about Ukraine," Trump remarked.
Interestingly, Zelenskyy is receiving unexpected support from Laura Loomer, known for her provocative social media presence and influence with Trump. After visiting Ukraine, Loomer expressed her changed views on Russian propaganda and plans to meet with Trump upon her return.
Loomer stated, "Things are looking positive for Ukraine," ahead of the Oval Office meeting.
Zelenskyy also raised concerns about Russia's assistance to Iran, claiming that satellite images of U.S. bases in the Gulf, which later appeared in Iran, indicate a troubling collaboration. He warned that the world must not ignore the fact that "evil always seeks ways to worsen situations and expand its reach."
Trump, however, downplayed the significance of any Russian support for Iran, asserting that it has not been impactful. He mentioned he would address the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zelenskyy's visit includes a busy schedule, with plans to meet senators at the Capitol following Graham's funeral. Republican leaders aim to advance Graham's sanctions legislation this week, despite other pressing matters before the Senate's August recess.
This bill, which has garnered bipartisan support, aims to impose tariffs on the top five global purchasers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India, and includes sanctions against Putin and key Russian officials.
Earlier this month, Trump and Zelenskyy met at the NATO summit in Ankara, where Trump announced that the U.S. would provide Ukraine with a license to produce Patriot air defense systems, a long-sought request from Kyiv to defend against Russian missile threats. Trump noted their growing relationship and assured that Ukraine would be able to produce these systems swiftly.
