What Sparked the Massive Student Protests in Athens? A Call for Change!
Massive Protests Erupt in Athens
Thousands of educators and students took to the streets of Athens on Wednesday, demanding affordable housing for students and increased government funding for education, as protests that have been sweeping across Europe continue to gain momentum.
Similar demonstrations were also reported in various Greek cities, including Thessaloniki and Patras.
The surge in living costs, particularly rising fuel prices, alongside frustrations regarding the quality of education and the scarcity of affordable student housing, have ignited protests throughout Europe. Notably, violent clashes have occurred during protests in France, Italy, and Albania.
One banner at the Athens protest proclaimed, "From Greece to France, fund education!" while others displayed signs in French stating, "To study or to survive."
Panagiotis Moschonas, a 20-year-old engineering student, voiced his discontent with the conservative government's lack of support for students facing financial hardships. He remarked, "They claim to assist students with a rent subsidy of 120 euros (USD 135) per month, but that barely covers half of the rent, and it’s only provided at the end of the year."
Riot police were present throughout the march, conducting random checks and bag inspections on attendees. Given the history of violence during protests in Greece, businesses along the route took precautions by closing their shutters.
Teachers also organized a strike for the day, although some schools remained operational.
Teacher Ioannis Rompas stated, "We are striking today because this situation is unsustainable for our families. The high costs are making it difficult to make ends meet, and the conditions in schools are deteriorating year after year."
