Jaishankar's Visit to South Korea: Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Seoul: On Wednesday, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in discussions with his South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun, emphasizing the importance of bilateral cooperation amid a shifting global landscape.

Jaishankar is on a two-day visit to South Korea, marking the second stop of his current foreign tour, following his trip to Mongolia.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Jaishankar remarked on the significance of their meeting, especially in light of current global events and the crucial nature of their bilateral relationship.

He referenced South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's visit to India in April and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent discussions with Lee at the G7 summit in Evian, France, as pivotal moments for enhancing their ties.

The dialogue primarily revolved around actionable steps in vital sectors such as trade, investment, and finance.

Jaishankar emphasized the role of foreign ministers in advancing this relationship, overseeing the interactions between various governmental and economic sectors.

He reiterated India's commitment to unlocking the full potential of their partnership, which both parties recognized still has ample room for expansion.

Following their meeting, Jaishankar shared on social media that they reviewed collaborative efforts across various domains, including politics, shipbuilding, trade, investments, defense, technology, clean energy, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.

The ministers also explored opportunities in startups, fintech, and multilateral forums, while sharing insights on regional and global developments.

Their discussions in Seoul extended through lunch and lasted approximately three hours.

Cho remarked that President Lee's visit to India was a pivotal moment for advancing Korea-India relations.

He expressed optimism for swift progress in trade, investment, and finance, and discussed strategies to build on their recent achievements.

Cho also highlighted India's hosting of Korea Week, which aligns with Modi's commitment to address challenges faced by Korean businesses in India.

He expressed gratitude for India's support and mentioned that Korea would soon host a similar dialogue for Indian companies.

The two foreign ministers engaged in a thorough discussion about the rapidly evolving global landscape and agreed on the necessity of maintaining close communication to address economic implications arising from developments in West Asia.

Later, Jaishankar met with South Korea's National Security Director, Wi Sung-lac, where they exchanged strategic assessments regarding global developments and the Indo-Pacific region.

Jaishankar and FM Cho are set to reconvene on Thursday at the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity, where Jaishankar will deliver the keynote address.
