What Did Trump and Macron Discuss About Greenland? A Look at Their Private Messages
Trump Reveals Private Messages from Macron and Rutte
Washington: On Tuesday, President Donald Trump of the United States shared screenshots that appeared to show private text exchanges with French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
In the messages, Macron expressed confusion over Trump's actions regarding Greenland and proposed organizing a G7 meeting in Paris after the World Economic Forum in Davos later this week.
Macron's message stated, "My friend, we are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things in Iran. I do not understand what you are doing in Greenland."
He also suggested, "I can set up a G7 meeting after Davos in Paris Thursday afternoon. I can invite the Ukrainians, the Danish, the Syrians, and the Russians in the margins. Let’s have dinner together in Paris on Thursday before you go back to the US."
Trump shared this message on his social media platform, Truth Social, captioning it, "Note from President Emmanuel Macron, of France."
Earlier on Monday, Trump announced a hefty 200% tariff on French wines and champagnes following France's criticism of the US stance on Greenland.
He remarked, "I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes. And he’ll join. But he doesn’t have to join."
In another post, Trump revealed a message from Mark Rutte, who praised Trump's efforts in Syria and expressed a desire to collaborate on Greenland.
Rutte's text read, "Mr. President, dear Donald – what you accomplished in Syria today is incredible. I will use my media engagements in Davos to highlight your work there, in Gaza, and in Ukraine. I am committed to finding a way forward on Greenland. Can’t wait to see you."
Trump thanked Rutte in his post, saying, "Thank you to Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO!"
On the same day, Trump intensified his rhetoric against Denmark, accusing the country of not addressing what he termed a persistent Russian threat to Greenland, signaling a renewed commitment to take action.
He stated on Truth Social, "NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that 'you have to get the Russian threat away from Greenland.' Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!!"
This situation has become a focal point in the escalating diplomatic tensions between Washington and various European nations, particularly following Trump's announcement of tariffs related to Greenland.
Since his return to office in 2025, Trump has consistently expressed his desire to "obtain" Greenland, citing security issues and geopolitical competition in the Arctic.
Greenland, recognized as the largest island globally, operates as a self-governing territory under the Kingdom of Denmark, although Denmark maintains authority over defense and foreign affairs.
The United States already has a significant military presence on the island, which is gaining strategic relevance amid increasing global interest in the Arctic.
