Vladimir Putin on India-China Relations: A Delicate Balance
Putin's Stance on India-China Relations
St Petersburg: On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow will refrain from meddling in the sensitive bilateral ties between India and China. He expressed confidence that both nations are dedicated to amicably resolving their longstanding border disputes.
During a comprehensive discussion with leaders from major global news organizations, Putin commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, noting their commitment to peacefully addressing the border issues.
"This relationship between India and China is intricate and multifaceted, and it is unwise to interfere. Naturally, we maintain relations with both nations," Putin remarked in response to a query from a prominent media executive.
"Both President Xi and Prime Minister Modi are working towards resolving all mutual concerns, including the border situation," he added.
India and China have implemented various initiatives over the past year to mend their relationship, which had been severely tested following the violent clashes in Galwan Valley in 2020 and the ensuing military standoff that persisted for over four years.
Emphasizing Moscow's strategic balance in Asia, Putin highlighted that its long-standing partnerships with both New Delhi and Beijing have developed independently and naturally.
He characterized these relationships as having evolved organically, asserting that Russia's growing collaboration with India does not detract from its ties with China, just as its strong alliance with China does not undermine its relationship with India.
Putin also provided historical context regarding the trilateral framework involving Russia, India, and China.
"At one point, I proposed that the leaders of India and China convene in Russia, which led to the establishment of the Russia-India-China dialogue. We had significant matters to discuss and agree upon," he explained.
The Russian leader also addressed the strained relations between India and Pakistan.
"We are fully aware of the complexities surrounding the border issues between India and Pakistan," he stated.
However, Putin expressed skepticism about Pakistan being under China's influence, saying, "I don't believe that. Pakistan is a large nation with diverse relationships with various countries."
"For Pakistan, it is crucial to consider its cooperation with China," he added when discussing the friendship between China and Pakistan.
Putin also mentioned Russia's defense and military collaborations with India, highlighting the co-development and production of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.
He suggested that Russia has proposed a joint effort with India to manufacture the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jet.
India is currently in the process of acquiring a batch of fifth-generation fighter jets.
"We have invited our Indian partners to collaborate on technology, particularly in fifth-generation technology... we are prepared to work with India in this area to supply aircraft," he stated.
The Russian president affirmed that his country is ready to provide India with essential technologies for significant defense platforms and weaponry.
