El Mencho's Demise Triggers Nationwide Chaos

The notorious drug lord, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” was killed during a military operation in Mexico over the weekend. His death has led to significant unrest across 20 of the country's 32 states, with suspected cartel affiliates setting fire to buses and businesses, obstructing highways, and engaging in violent confrontations with law enforcement. Authorities reported a staggering 252 blockades nationwide, particularly affecting Jalisco and bringing Guadalajara, the second-largest city in Mexico, to a near halt. Amid this turmoil, an audio recording from 2016 has surfaced online, featuring El Mencho issuing a menacing warning to security forces. In the clip, he can be heard demanding, "Tell your sons of b***es to fall back right now," instructing authorities to retreat. He further threatens, "You better tell your people to leave us alone, it's Mencho's business. Get your men to fall back or I'm going to f**k up you and your whole squad. I have 30 of you located and identified. I'll even kill your dogs if you don't chill out bro."

What is particularly alarming is the response from the police officer on the line, who refers to El Mencho as "boss" and "sir," expressing his respect for the cartel leader. The authenticity of the audio clip has not been independently verified. The gang leader also mentions how the officer had previously agreed to collaborate with him and accepted payments, stating, "Because all of you happily accept my money." The officer calmly replies, "You got it, sir. I'll tell the police squads to fall back." At one point, El Mencho issues a direct threat, saying, "Get your s**t together or you'll be the first one that I'll make an example of." He warns the officer not to disconnect the call, insisting he would reach out again to confirm the police's withdrawal. The officer offers to call back with updates, but El Mencho insists he will make the call himself.

In the wake of El Mencho's death, several countries, including the US, Canada, and India, have advised their citizens in affected areas to stay indoors. Numerous airlines have suspended flights to Puerto Vallarta and other impacted regions, leaving many travelers in a difficult situation. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for calm among the populace.
