Alleged Hate Crime in Utah

A man has been taken into custody in Utah after allegedly stabbing a Muslim individual multiple times in what authorities are investigating as a hate crime motivated by religion. Court documents revealed that the suspect confessed to targeting the victim due to his faith. According to investigators, the accused expressed intentions to harm Muslims and indicated he would pose a significant threat to the community if released, citing his violent behavior and extremist beliefs.

The assault occurred at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City on Monday. Police reported that the victim suffered numerous stab wounds and was bleeding heavily. Bystanders managed to restrain the suspect until law enforcement arrived.

Peter Michael Larsen, 48, has been charged with attempted murder and unlawful use of a dangerous weapon, as per jail records. The victim, a Muslim kiosk employee, was approached by Larsen, who inquired about his name and religion under the pretense of wanting a bottle of water. As the victim turned to fetch the water, the attack commenced.

The victim is currently hospitalized in critical condition, with a GoFundMe campaign launched to assist with medical expenses, indicating he was stabbed 15 times and requires surgery. The attacker also sustained injuries during the altercation with bystanders before being arrested.

Muslim advocacy organizations, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations, have condemned this violent act. Rights advocates in the U.S. have highlighted a concerning rise in Islamophobia over the past two decades, exacerbated by various socio-political factors, including anti-immigration sentiments and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Previous violent incidents against Muslims include a 2023 stabbing of a 6-year-old boy in Illinois and a 2026 shooting at a mosque in San Diego that resulted in multiple fatalities.
