New Delhi: According to a report from a news agency, officials from the United States and Russia have engaged in discussions regarding multiple energy agreements as part of ongoing peace negotiations concerning Ukraine. This information comes from five sources familiar with the discussions.
The report indicates that these energy deals are intended as incentives for the Russian government to agree to a peace settlement with Ukraine, which would also facilitate the lifting of sanctions imposed on Russia.
Among the proposals discussed were the potential re-involvement of American oil giant Exxon Mobil in Russia's Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project, as well as the possibility of Russia acquiring US equipment for its LNG initiatives in the Arctic.
These matters were also touched upon during the Alaska summit held on August 15, as noted by one source.
This development arrives as the US is set to implement a 50% penal tariff on Indian exports starting Wednesday, specifically targeting purchases of Russian oil.
President Trump has indicated that this additional 25% tariff is a sanction against India for its Russian oil purchases, aimed at pressuring Moscow into a peace agreement regarding Ukraine.
In response, India has asserted that its acquisition of Russian oil serves both national and global interests. These transactions have helped maintain lower prices for Indian consumers and prevented a surge in global oil prices, which could have adversely affected economies worldwide. The US rationale for permitting India to purchase Russian oil was to stabilize global prices.
Interestingly, while China imports more oil from Russia than India, the Trump administration has not imposed similar tariffs on China.
Reports suggest that Trump is focusing on India due to its clear stance that he played no role in the peace negotiations with Pakistan following Operation Sindoor. India has stated that after successful precision strikes against terrorist camps in Pakistan, Islamabad sought peace talks, which New Delhi accepted as the operation achieved its objectives.
This situation contrasts with Trump's portrayal as a peacemaker who has resolved numerous global conflicts since taking office.
Conversely, Pakistan has been supporting this narrative and has even recommended Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize as part of its efforts to strengthen ties with Washington.
