UN Report Highlights Systematic Violence Against Palestinian Children
Tragic Incident of a Young Boy
A heartbreaking incident unfolded when a 14-year-old boy lay bleeding outside his home for 45 minutes after being shot by an Israeli patrol. On that day, there was no conflict; the boy was simply stepping outside when he was struck. As he succumbed to his injuries, a group of soldiers stood nearby, engaged in conversation and smoking, until the boy's life ended. This tragic scene was recounted by Commissioner Chris Sidoti during a press conference in Geneva, encapsulating the findings of a UN inquiry that describes a systematic campaign against children in Gaza and the West Bank.
UN Inquiry's Findings
The commission's chair, Justice Srinivasan Muralidhar, emphasized that the evidence indicates a deliberate targeting of Palestinian children by Israeli security forces. The report, ominously titled "The essence of childhood has been destroyed," presents findings that are challenging to digest in one sitting. Israel has firmly rejected the report, labeling it as propaganda.
Alarming Statistics
Since October 7, 2023, the commission reports that approximately 20,000 Palestinian children have been killed, with an additional 44,000 injured. These figures are accompanied by harrowing details, including newborns lost due to strikes on maternity facilities, children suffering from starvation due to blockades, and minors subjected to torture in Israeli detention centers. The report also highlights instances of sexual violence against children, framing it as part of a broader pattern of oppression.
Long-Term Impact on Society
The report argues that the destruction extends beyond physical harm, with orphanages and schools dismantled, disrupting the fabric of society. The commission describes an "occupied psyche," indicating that a generation of children is deprived of the freedom to play, dream, and hope. Justice Muralidhar noted that even if hostilities cease, the damage to children's health, education, and development is irreversible.
Continued Violence Despite Ceasefire
Compounding the tragedy, the report indicates that violence against children has persisted even after a ceasefire was declared in October 2025. The commission asserts that Israel has continued to disregard international laws designed to protect children, with killings and injuries ongoing.
Call for Accountability
The commission, established by the UN Human Rights Council in 2021, has identified specific military units responsible for these acts and has urged Israel and all UN member states to ensure accountability. It has called for an end to violations and for Israel to withdraw from occupied territories, including East Jerusalem.
Israel's Response
In response, Israel dismissed the report as a "libelous sham," asserting that every child deserves protection from terrorism. The Israeli government criticized the commission for allegedly ignoring the suffering of Israeli children and for failing to verify its claims adequately.
The Unnamed Victim
The 14-year-old boy who died outside his home remains unnamed in public discourse, representing one of many victims. The commission's report serves as a reminder that he should not be reduced to a mere statistic and that accountability is essential.
