Ukrainian Drone Strikes Intensify: Casualties and Economic Impact on Russia
Escalating Drone Warfare
Moscow: Recent Ukrainian drone assaults have resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals across various regions in Russia, targeting industrial sites and a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, a major Russian e-commerce platform, as reported by local authorities.
Wildberries, often likened to Amazon, has faced multiple strikes in less than two weeks, with over a dozen of its depots hit. This is part of Ukraine's broader aerial strategy to disrupt Russia's military operations, weaken its economy, and make the repercussions of the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine felt by its citizens.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry, air defenses successfully intercepted 635 Ukrainian drones overnight, including those over Crimea and the Black and Azov Seas. However, the ministry did not disclose the total number of drones launched or those that hit their intended targets.
In retaliation, Russia launched 133 drones against Ukraine during the night, with 24 successfully striking targets, as per the Ukrainian air force. Additionally, separate Russian assaults on the cities of Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv resulted in at least two fatalities, according to local officials.
Targeting Wildberries
Ukrainian drones specifically targeted a Wildberries warehouse located in the Samara region, approximately 800 kilometers (500 miles) from the border with Ukraine, as stated by local Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev. Although a fire erupted, there were no reported casualties.
The campaign against Wildberries began with strikes on the company's facilities in Elektrostal, near Moscow, and in the Tambov region on July 18. Subsequent attacks have occurred across western and southern Russia, including Russian-occupied Crimea, resulting in at least nine deaths and numerous injuries.
In the Saratov region, a Ukrainian drone strike on a residential building led to the deaths of two individuals, as reported by local Governor Roman Busargin. He noted that the strikes caused damage to civil infrastructure in Engels, where the fatalities occurred, and in the regional capital, Saratov.
Both cities have been frequent targets of Ukrainian drone strikes in recent years, with Engels housing a military airbase and Saratov hosting a significant oil refinery.
In the Bashkortostan region, local Governor Radiy Khabirov reported that air defenses thwarted a large-scale drone attack on industrial sites in Ufa, although he did not specify the exact targets. He mentioned that firefighters were working to extinguish a blaze.
In the Udmurt Republic, three civilians lost their lives and two others were injured due to a Ukrainian drone strike, according to acting regional head Olga Abramova. She confirmed that air defenses intercepted two drones and prevented further attacks, although a civilian vehicle was damaged, the cause of which was not clarified.
In Ukraine, one person was killed when a Russian guided bomb struck a residential building in Zaporizhzhia, as reported by local administration head Ivan Fedorov. Another attack in Kharkiv resulted in one death and ignited a fire at a postal terminal on the city's outskirts, according to regional administration head Oleh Syniehubov.
