Intensified Drone Assaults by Ukraine

Kyiv has intensified its drone operations against Russia, resulting in a significant fire at a major oil refinery in southern Russia, with Russian officials reporting at least two fatalities on Sunday.

In recent months, Ukraine has notably increased its long-range strikes targeting Russian military and energy infrastructure, aiming to diminish Moscow's financial resources for its ongoing invasion, which has now entered its fifth year, and to make the Russian populace feel the impact.

This offensive has disrupted fuel supplies and military logistics for Russia. Analysts from the West suggest that these actions have hindered Moscow's battlefield capabilities, increasing pressure on the Kremlin to engage in peace negotiations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced via Telegram that their long-range operations had successfully targeted two oil refineries in Russia, emphasizing that each attack reduces the resources fueling the Russian military and brings Ukraine closer to peace.

According to Governor Veniamin Kondratyev, debris from intercepted Ukrainian drones ignited a fire at the refinery located in Slavyansk-na-Kubani, situated in Russia's Krasnodar region, east of the annexed Crimea. The debris resulted in one death in Sloviansk and injuries to another individual in a nearby village.

The Sloviansk facility is a significant refinery in southern Russia, processing nearly 4 million tons of crude oil annually, as stated on its operator's website. It serves as a crucial source of petroleum products for export through Russia's Black Sea ports, including fuel oil and marine fuel.

Images and videos shared on Russian social media depicted a large plume of smoke rising from what users identified as the Sloviansk refinery. However, the Associated Press could not immediately authenticate these visuals.

Zelenskyy also reported that a second refinery in the Yaroslavl region, approximately 700 kilometers (435 miles) from Ukraine, was struck during the nighttime operations.

There were no immediate updates from Russian officials regarding the attack on the Yaroslavl refinery. Local Governor Mikhail Evraev mentioned that some roads connecting Moscow to Yaroslavl were temporarily closed due to the drone assault.

Yaroslavl's airport was also briefly shut down overnight, along with other airports in southern and western Russia, as per the country's civil aviation authority.

In another incident, drone strikes from Ukraine resulted in one death and another injury in Russia's Belgorod border region, as reported by acting Governor Alexander Shuvayev.

Russia's Defense Ministry claimed that its forces intercepted 213 Ukrainian drones overnight, including those over Russian territory, occupied Crimea, and the Black and Azov seas.

Simultaneously, Russia launched an attack on Ukraine using 142 long-range strike drones and eight missiles overnight, with the Ukrainian air force reporting that 125 drones and seven missiles were successfully intercepted.
