Uganda Declares Victory Over Ebola: What This Means for the Nation
End of the Ebola Outbreak in Uganda
Kampala: On Tuesday, Uganda's Ministry of Health announced the official conclusion of the recent Ebola outbreak, citing significant progress in epidemiological studies and a comprehensive understanding of the outbreak that confirmed the interruption of transmission.
Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi stated, "We are delighted to inform you that Uganda has officially declared the end of the 2026 Ebola outbreak. Today, Uganda is free from Ebola."
This declaration was made prior to the World Health Organization's (WHO) standard 42-day countdown, which begins after the last patient is discharged. The final Ebola patient in Uganda was released on July 16 after testing negative for the virus, according to reports.
The Ministry of Health's announcement was based on the identification of the outbreak's origin, the complete mapping of transmission chains, the epidemiological connections among all confirmed cases, successful monitoring of all identified contacts, and enhanced nationwide surveillance that revealed no further community transmission.
While the traditional 42-day criterion remains a crucial measure in uncertain transmission scenarios, it should not be the sole factor in declaring an outbreak over when an imported case has been thoroughly characterized and epidemiological closure has been clearly established, the ministry noted.
Furthermore, Uganda plans to bolster its surveillance efforts, maintain readiness—especially in border areas—and collaborate closely with neighboring nations. The government reassured citizens, tourists, and investors that the country is safe and open for business, tourism, and other socio-economic activities.
The outbreak was initially declared on May 15 after an imported Ebola case was confirmed from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Uganda reported a total of 20 confirmed cases, with 18 recoveries and two fatalities.
Ebola is a severe and often deadly disease that affects humans and other primates. The virus is transmitted to humans from wild animals like fruit bats and porcupines, and it spreads among people through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals, as well as contaminated surfaces and materials.
