In a tragic event early Sunday morning, a police officer in Tucson, Arizona, shot a suspect who was critically injured following a mass shooting that resulted in nine individuals being wounded. According to the Tucson Police Department, officers on patrol in the downtown area heard gunfire near East Congress Street and North 6th Avenue around 2:00 AM local time and rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers spotted a man fleeing the vicinity. They issued several commands before one officer discharged his weapon, hitting the suspect. The individual was apprehended and received immediate medical attention before being transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Fortunately, no officers sustained injuries during the incident.
Nine other victims suffered gunshot wounds, mainly to their arms and legs. Emergency medical assistance was provided by the officers until firefighters arrived to transport all injured parties to the hospital. While all victims were initially in critical condition, they have since been stabilized.
The shooting led to road closures in the vicinity as investigators worked at the scene, and drivers were advised to steer clear of the area. The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team has initiated a criminal investigation, with the Pima County Sheriff's Department overseeing the inquiry into the officer-involved shooting. Additionally, the Tucson Police Department will conduct its own internal review to assess any potential violations of departmental policies. The results of both investigations will be submitted to the Pima County Attorney's Office for evaluation.
Authorities are seeking information or video evidence from anyone who witnessed the incident and are accepting anonymous tips through 88-CRIME. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero condemned the violence, expressing her concern over the incident. "Last night, Tucson experienced another serious and senseless act of gun violence," she stated. She commended the swift response from emergency services, noting that all victims were stabilized and transported to the hospital with hopes for their recovery.
Mayor Romero also advocated for stricter gun safety regulations, emphasizing that Arizona's lax gun laws pose a risk to the community. She called for measures such as universal background checks and funding for violence prevention initiatives, stating, "There is more lawmakers can and should do." This incident marks the 10th officer-involved shooting in Tucson this year and the 52nd across the state.
