Trump Intervenes in FIFA Suspension Decision

Reports indicate that US President Donald Trump personally reached out to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss the suspension of Folarin Balogun, a forward for the United States, following his red card during a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the New York Times, which cited three sources familiar with the matter, Trump made the call on Wednesday after Balogun's dismissal.

On Sunday, FIFA announced that Balogun, the top scorer for the US, would be permitted to play against Belgium on Monday, temporarily lifting his one-match ban. This decision is notable as it marks the first instance since 1962 where FIFA has allowed a player to participate in a game despite being under suspension.

This development comes amid Infantino's growing rapport with Trump, highlighted by FIFA awarding the US president its inaugural FIFA Peace Prize last year. Following FIFA's announcement, Trump expressed his gratitude on his Truth Social platform, stating, "Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice," although he did not reference his conversation with Infantino.

Sports journalist Ben Jacobs reported that the White House also reached out to Infantino regarding Balogun's situation. However, FIFA sources clarified that any communication from the White House did not sway the disciplinary panel's independent ruling.

Balogun received a red card during the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina for a foul on an opposing player. According to FIFA's regulations, this dismissal typically results in an automatic one-match suspension, which would have excluded him from the upcoming game against Belgium. FIFA explained their decision by stating, "In line with article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year." They further noted that if Balogun commits another similar offense during this period, the suspension will be enforced along with any additional penalties for the new violation.
