Trump's Dual Strategy on Iran: Diplomacy with a Military Option
Trump's Approach to Iran
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has articulated a clear two-pronged strategy regarding Iran, emphasizing a commitment to diplomatic negotiations while keeping military action as a potential option. In an interview with Fox News, Trump expressed confidence in reaching a "great deal" with Iran, but also stated, "if not, we’ll just go back and finish it off militarily." He acknowledged the Iranian leadership as "very tough negotiators" and noted that progress is being made, albeit slowly. "We're close to a very good deal... It takes a long time. I’m in no hurry," he remarked, adding that rushing could jeopardize the outcome. He believes that a successful agreement would be beneficial, stating it would "save a lot of lives" and allow for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz upon signing.
Trump also reflected on the US military presence in Iraq and Iran, describing past actions as misguided. "You look at what happened with Iraq. We did so bad. It was such a foolish thing, what we did. We shouldn’t have been there in the first place, by the way. We shouldn’t have been in Iran, but Iran has the capability," he commented. Additionally, he referred to the Iranian military as moderates, suggesting a deliberate restraint in US military actions against them.
Earlier today, Trump posted an AI-generated image on his social media platform, Truth Social, depicting himself in a decorated military uniform, with fighter jets and US-flagged warships in the background. The image was captioned: "YOU’RE GETTING DISCOMBOBULATED."

Trump's social media activity followed a warning from US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who stated that the military is ready to take action against Iran if diplomatic negotiations do not yield results. The Pentagon chief emphasized that Trump is "patient" and aims to secure a deal that prevents Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
