Trump Halts Talks with Iran Amid Protests: What’s Next for the Islamic Republic?
Trump's Decision to Cancel Talks
Washington: On Tuesday, President Trump announced the cancellation of discussions with Iranian officials in light of the ongoing crackdown on protests, assuring Iranian citizens that "help is on its way."
While Trump did not elaborate on the nature of the assistance, his comments followed earlier statements where he indicated that Iran was interested in negotiations after he threatened military action against the nation, which has reportedly resulted in over 2,000 deaths according to human rights organizations.
However, in a recent social media update, Trump seemed to change his stance regarding engagement with the Iranian government.
"Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING – TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!!" Trump declared in a morning post on Truth Social. "Remember the names of the killers and abusers. They will face consequences. I have canceled all meetings with Iranian officials until the senseless killing of protesters ceases. HELP IS ON ITS WAY."
The president has consistently warned Tehran of potential military responses if his administration determines that the Islamic Republic is employing lethal force against demonstrators, yet he has not confirmed any specific actions to be taken.
