The outcome is anticipated to be a notable win for Trump, especially since he secured Kentucky by over 30 points in the 2024 presidential election. In the lead-up to the election, Trump took to social media to denounce Massie, stating, "Horrible Congressman Thomas Massie put out an old endorsement from many years ago, before I realized he was the Worst Congressman in the History of our Country." He further asserted his support for Gallrein, calling him a "true American Patriot" and demanded Massie retract his previous statements.
Massie countered by sharing an image of an earlier endorsement from Trump. The primary also highlighted divisions within the conservative movement, particularly regarding foreign policy and transparency. Notably, conservative commentator Candace Owens, who has been critical of Trump’s stance on U.S. involvement in the Iran-Israel conflict, expressed her support for Massie.
