Trump Announces Oil Shipments from Strait of Hormuz Amid Iran Deal
Trump's Announcement on Oil Shipments
In a recent update, Donald Trump revealed that vessels have begun departing from the Strait of Hormuz, many carrying oil. This announcement came shortly after he disclosed a deal regarding Iran on Monday. Trump shared this information via a post on Truth Social, stating that the ships are navigating the Southern 'Highway,' which he described as completely safe and secure. He also mentioned that there are additional travel routes available.
Trump's declaration followed the announcement of an initial agreement concerning the Iran conflict late Sunday night, coinciding with his 80th birthday, which many viewed as a significant 'birthday breakthrough.' The formal signing of the deal is scheduled for Friday, June 19, in Geneva, Switzerland, with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hosting the event. Key figures expected to attend include Secretary of State Marco Rubio and representatives from Iran.
Iran's Conditions for Implementation
Iran has indicated that the implementation of the deal will not commence until it is officially signed, which Pakistan has confirmed will occur on Friday in Switzerland. However, the memorandum of understanding regarding the conflict has already encountered obstacles. Ongoing tensions between Israel and the Iranian-backed militia Hezbollah in Lebanon, highlighted by Israeli airstrikes in Beirut's southern suburbs on Sunday, nearly jeopardized the negotiations.
Israel's Stance on Withdrawal
Following the announcement of the deal, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Israel will not retreat from territories it has seized in Lebanon while the interim agreement is still pending. Katz emphasized that Israel intends to maintain its presence indefinitely in the lands it occupies in Lebanon, Syria, and the Gaza Strip. Iran has linked the interim agreement to a cessation of Israeli attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon. Furthermore, Katz warned that if Iran retaliates against Israel for its actions in Lebanon, Israel would respond with significant force.
The Iran conflict initially erupted on February 28, and an interim agreement has been reached after 107 days of hostilities.
