Tragic Truck Accident in Bangladesh Claims 15 Lives
Fatal Incident on Highway
In a devastating accident early Monday morning, a truck loaded with iron rods and additional passengers flipped over on a major highway in central Bangladesh, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 individuals and injuring 10 others, according to police reports. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. in the Soratoil area of Tangail district, located 83 kilometers (52 miles) northwest of Dhaka, the capital city. Local police chief Fuad Hossain stated that the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The truck was reportedly transporting hitchhikers from Dhaka to northern regions as many vacationers were traveling ahead of the upcoming Islamic festival, Eid al-Adha, scheduled for Thursday, May 28. Tragically, the truck overturned, leading to immediate fatalities at the scene.
Most of the passengers were day laborers heading home to celebrate the festival with their families. Eyewitnesses recounted how they rushed to the site upon hearing the crash and began rescuing those trapped inside the vehicle.
Road accidents are a significant concern in Bangladesh, where thousands lose their lives annually due to inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations, poor road conditions, and untrained drivers.
