Devastating Train Accident in Central Spain

A catastrophic incident occurred in central Spain when a high-speed train collided with the rear of another train that had come to a halt, resulting in the derailment of two carriages and claiming the lives of at least 30 individuals, as reported by local news outlets.

Initially, authorities indicated that the death toll was around 10, but Esther Padilla, a spokesperson for the Castilla La Mancha region, later stated that this figure is expected to increase.

According to reports from the state-owned news agency EFE and other sources, the number of fatalities has now risen to a minimum of 30.

This marks the second significant train disaster in Spain within the current year.

The collision took place on Wednesday morning in the Toledo province, leading to the suspension of rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Andalusia.

Padilla informed state broadcaster TVE that the accident involved two high-speed trains traveling in the same direction from Madrid to Seville, with one train crashing into the back of the other, which had stopped, causing two of its cars to derail. The cause of the incident remains unclear.

The crash occurred in a flat area surrounded by fields, between the towns of Urda and Los Yebenes, resulting in one carriage being completely destroyed and debris scattered down a gravel slope.

Spanish Health Minister Monica Garcia stated that emergency responders are concentrating on rescuing survivors and recovering bodies from the two most severely damaged train cars. Injured passengers are being transported to various hospitals in the vicinity.

"The impact was at high speed, so we anticipate this will be a tragic event," Garcia remarked.

The incident involved a train operated by Spain's state-owned RENFE and another by the private company IRYO. Reports suggest that the RENFE train collided with the IRYO train. Both companies were also involved in a deadly crash earlier this year.

Padilla noted that there were 397 passengers aboard the RENFE train and 147 on the IRYO train.

IRYO, which is Italian-owned, announced that it has activated its safety protocols and is collaborating closely with authorities.

Manuel Galan, the mayor of Urda, mentioned that civil protection officials requested his town to prepare a sports pavilion to assist injured passengers.

A military emergency brigade has been dispatched to support emergency services, firefighters, and police at the crash site.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has canceled his schedule to focus on the incident, expressing his dismay over the serious train accident in Toledo via a post on X. He stated, "Emergency services are on-site attending to the affected passengers," and extended his thoughts to the victims and their families.

The regional president of Castilla La Mancha, Emiliano Garcia-Page, also announced that he was en route to the crash site.

Earlier this year, a tragic incident in southern Spain resulted in 45 fatalities when a train derailed and collided with an oncoming train, marking the deadliest train accident in Spain since a 2013 disaster that claimed 80 lives. This recent incident has raised concerns about the safety of the country's extensive high-speed rail network.
