Tragic Stampede at Bengaluru Stadium Claims Lives Amid IPL Celebrations

Stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium

At least 11 individuals are feared dead, and over 33 have sustained injuries following a stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, as reported by Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramiah on Wednesday. The incident occurred as fans of the Royal Challengers Bangalore gathered to celebrate the team's victory in the Indian Premier League. The chaos erupted at Gate Number 3, where the team was anticipated to arrive.

Injuries and Political Reactions

Those injured are currently receiving medical attention at Bowring Hospital in the city. The Bharatiya Janata Party has called for the Congress-led state government to take full accountability for this unfortunate event.

Upcoming Population Census in India

India is set to conduct its population census, which will include caste enumeration, in two distinct phases. The initial phase will target hilly and snow-covered regions in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, with a reference date of October 1, 2026, as announced by the Union Home Ministry. The second phase will cover the remaining parts of the country, with a reference date of March 1, 2027. The last census was conducted in 2011, and the 2020 exercise was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Supreme Court Ruling on Bhopal Gas Tragedy Waste

The Supreme Court has refused to stop the incineration of hazardous chemical waste from the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy site in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh. An activist had requested an urgent hearing regarding a Madhya Pradesh High Court ruling that allowed the state government 72 days to dispose of the waste collected from the Union Carbide factory. The incineration began on May 5, and the plea for an urgent hearing was made as the 72-day period is set to conclude soon.

Monsoon Session of Parliament Scheduled

The Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to commence on July 21 and conclude on August 12, as announced by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. This announcement comes amid calls from the Opposition for a special session to address the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. The session is also expected to include discussions on an impeachment motion against former Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, following the discovery of unaccounted cash at his residence in March.
