Fatal Accident on Kenyan Highway

Nairobi: A tragic road accident on the highway leading to Mombasa has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals, as reported by local authorities on Saturday. The majority of the deceased were pilgrims en route to a religious site.

The collision occurred in the Salama region shortly after midnight when a truck attempted to overtake another vehicle but lost control, leading to a crash involving several vehicles, including a van filled with pilgrims, according to police reports.

The truck driver and a dozen passengers in the van were pronounced dead at the scene, as confirmed by law enforcement officials.

The pilgrims were traveling to a prayer location in Nakuru County, situated to the west of Nairobi, as stated by Martin Kivuva, the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa. The exact number of pilgrims in the van and the possibility of any survivors remain unclear.

Road safety is a significant concern throughout Africa, with many accidents attributed to factors such as poorly maintained vehicles, excessive speed, and inadequate road conditions.
