Kaylee Hottle, an 18-year-old deaf actress renowned for her role as Jia in the 2021 blockbuster Godzilla vs Kong, has tragically passed away following a car accident in Maryland, as confirmed by her father. Joshua Hottle shared the heartbreaking news with TMZ after conducting an emotional livestream on Facebook, where he communicated the details using American Sign Language (ASL). He revealed that he was in Texas when he received the distressing news about his daughter's involvement in a crash. Later, he was informed that her heart had stopped during transport to the hospital.
Hottle gained fame for portraying Jia, a young girl who uses sign language to communicate with King Kong, living on Skull Island alongside Dr. Ilene Andrews, played by Rebecca Hall. She was set to reprise her role in the upcoming sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Born in 2007, Hottle began her acting journey with commercials, including a notable advertisement for the video messaging app Glide, popular among the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. She also appeared in a minor role in the Prime Video series Magnum P.I.
In a 2024 interview with a local magazine, Hottle shared how she was discovered by casting director Sarah Halley Finn after featuring in a commercial for the video relay service app Convo. "I had a connection with Convo. They asked me to be in a commercial one day, and so I did that commercial," she explained through an interpreter. "Then the assistant director of Kong: Skull Island saw me and thought I fit the character description of Jia." Hottle was a student at the Texas School for the Deaf, which she praised for its supportive environment, stating, "I have deaf teachers, and everyone is able to communicate with me through sign language."
Discussing the representation of deaf actors in Hollywood, Hottle expressed optimism, saying, "I see a lot of positive things. There's not a lot of deaf roles or opportunities out there. And so now we're able, [and] I'm able to get them, and I think I've seen more and more growth and positivity." Hottle came from a family with a rich legacy of deaf relatives spanning four generations on her father's side. In his emotional Facebook post, Joshua Hottle mentioned he was traveling to Maryland to retrieve his daughter's body, stating, "I am taking a flight that I never would like to take."
