Heartbreaking Incident Following a Joyous Celebration

An Indian-origin family in the United States faced a devastating loss shortly after a wedding celebration. Dave Fiji, a pilot for Delta Air Lines, tragically lost his life when a helicopter carrying him and his new wife, Jesni, crashed in Georgia just hours after their wedding ceremony. The couple had celebrated their union with nearly 400 guests before boarding a Robinson R66 helicopter near their wedding venue in Dawsonville. While both Dave and the helicopter pilot perished in the accident, Jesni survived and is currently recuperating in a metro Atlanta hospital. Dave’s father, George, shared his grief, recalling how he admired his son on what should have been a joyful day.

The helicopter was headed to DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, a special flight arranged for the couple as they began their first night together as a married couple in downtown Atlanta. Unfortunately, the helicopter crashed in a 10,000-acre wooded area managed by the City of Atlanta for wildlife purposes, according to eyewitness accounts. Jesni was trapped in the wreckage for approximately six hours before rescuers could reach her. Upon regaining consciousness, she found her husband lying beside her, already cold. Being a nurse, she understood the gravity of the situation, as George recounted.

Concerns Over Weather Conditions

George revealed that Dave had voiced worries about the adverse weather conditions prior to takeoff. As a first officer for Delta Air Lines, he informed the pilot about the zero visibility, a situation that typically grounds flights. According to George, Jesni recounted that the pilot assured Dave they would ascend to a higher altitude. “Without God, there would be many questions — why?” George expressed to the media. “We were blessed with a perfect wedding, and within hours, it turned into a tragedy. The only solace we find is in our faith,” he added. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the crash, but no official statements regarding the cause have been released yet.
