Tragic Coal Mine Explosion in China: Eight Lives Lost and 38 Trapped

Fatal Incident in Shanxi Province

Beijing: A devastating gas explosion occurred at a coal mine in Shanxi province, northern China, resulting in the deaths of at least eight individuals and leaving 38 others trapped underground, as reported by state media on Saturday.

The incident took place on Friday evening at the Liushenyu coal mine located in Changzhi city. According to the official news agency Xinhua, approximately 247 workers were present underground during the explosion. By early Saturday, 201 of those workers had been successfully rescued.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the explosion, as stated by Xinhua.

In response to the tragedy, Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged for a comprehensive rescue operation for those still missing and has called for a thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing accountability for those responsible.

Shanxi province is recognized as the primary coal mining region in China. Covering an area larger than Greece and home to around 34 million residents, the province's miners produced 1.3 billion tons (1.17 billion metric tons) of coal last year, accounting for nearly one-third of the nation's total output.
