Tragic Cloudburst in Kishtwar: Search Operations Underway as Casualties Rise
Devastating Cloudburst Hits Kishtwar District
Jammu: A severe cloudburst has struck a remote village on the route to the Machail Mata pilgrimage in Kishtwar district, leading to fears that at least 10 individuals may have lost their lives, according to officials.
The incident occurred in Chasoti, the final village accessible by road before reaching the Machail Mata shrine.
In light of this disaster, the annual pilgrimage has been halted as authorities mobilize resources for a large-scale rescue and relief effort.
Kishtwar's Deputy Commissioner, Pankaj Kumar Sharma, and Senior Superintendent of Police, Naresh Singh, are en route to the affected area to oversee the rescue operations.
A team led by the Sub-divisional Magistrate of Padder has already arrived at the site, where it is currently believed that 10 people have perished due to the cloudburst.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his condolences for the victims of this tragic event.
He shared his sorrow over the cloudburst in Chositi Kishtwar and extended his prayers for the swift recovery of those injured. He has instructed Civil, Police, Army, NDRF, and SDRF officials to enhance rescue and relief efforts, ensuring that all necessary support is provided to those affected.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh confirmed that he has been in contact with Deputy Commissioner Sharma regarding the situation.
He noted the severity of the cloudburst in the Chositi area, which could lead to significant casualties. The administration has promptly initiated action, dispatching rescue teams to the location.
Deputy Commissioner Sharma stated that extensive rescue operations are currently underway.
Officials reported that flash floods have impacted numerous homes in this densely populated hamlet situated at the foothills.
Leader of the Opposition, Sunil Kumar Sharma, mentioned that he received reports of the massive cloudburst.
While exact figures are not available at this time, he anticipates considerable damage in the area, particularly due to the congestion caused by the ongoing pilgrimage.
