Tragic Attack on Hindu Businessman in Bangladesh: Three Arrested
Incident Overview
Dhaka: On Sunday, authorities apprehended three individuals in connection with the brutal murder of a Hindu businessman in Shariatpur district, according to local news sources.
Khokon Chandra Das, aged 50, was attacked near Keurbhanga Bazar in Damudya, located approximately 100 kilometers south of Dhaka, on Wednesday night. He succumbed to his injuries on Saturday. A team from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the suspects on Sunday morning in Kishoreganj, about 100 kilometers northeast of the capital.
The suspects have been identified as 27-year-old Sohag Khan, 21-year-old Rabbi Molya, and 25-year-old Palash Sardar.
Superintendent of Police Mir Monir Hossain from the RAB Madaripur Camp confirmed that the suspects were being transported to the Madaripur camp from Kishoreganj, which is roughly 20 kilometers from Shariatpur.
Das, who operated a medicine shop and mobile banking service, was traveling in an autorickshaw when the assailants intercepted him. They reportedly assaulted him with sharp weapons, doused him in petrol, and set him ablaze. In a desperate attempt to escape, Das jumped into a nearby pond as locals raised an alarm. The attackers fled, but he was rescued by bystanders and taken to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital before being referred to Dhaka due to the severity of his injuries.
Medical professionals in Dhaka reported that Das sustained multiple injuries, including a severe abdominal wound and burns on his face, head, and hands.
Shariatpur Superintendent of Police Rawnak Jahan stated that Das identified his attackers before passing away, as reported by BDNews24.
Das's death marks the fifth fatality among the Hindu community in Bangladesh since December, with representatives from the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council expressing concerns over the increasing intimidation faced by minority groups in the country.
