Violence Erupts in Nigeria's Plateau State

Abuja (Nigeria): A tragic incident unfolded in the north-central region of Nigeria, where an armed group took the lives of at least 20 individuals, as reported by local police on Monday.

The assault transpired on Sunday in the Kawel community, situated within the Bokkos area of Plateau State, according to police spokesperson Alfred Alabo.

Law enforcement quickly responded to the scene, engaging in a gunfight with the attackers, which ultimately forced them to flee. However, no arrests have been made as of yet.

No organization has come forward to claim responsibility for this violent act, which is part of a troubling trend in a region plagued by ongoing violence.

Alabo further stated, "The bodies of the deceased have been returned to their families for burial, as they opted against an autopsy."

In response to the tragedy, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has directed emergency management and humanitarian agencies to provide immediate assistance to the affected families, as noted by spokesperson Joyce Ramnap.

The United Nations has reported that an insurgency in northeastern Nigeria has resulted in thousands of deaths and millions displaced over the years. Additionally, armed gangs remain active in both the northwest and north-central regions.

Earlier this year, a nighttime raid in the Gari Ya Waye community of Plateau resulted in the deaths of 20 individuals.
