Details of the Incident

Tiger Woods exhibited signs of impairment following a recent car accident in Florida, as detailed in a report from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. The document indicated that Woods had bloodshot and glassy eyes, dilated pupils, and displayed slow, lethargic movements while interacting with deputies at the scene. Officers observed that he was sweating and mentioned having taken prescription medication earlier that day. Two white pills found in his pocket were later identified as hydrocodone, an opioid for pain relief. When questioned about his medication, Woods reportedly stated, "I take a few."

The report revealed that Woods was distracted by his phone and adjusting the radio when his Land Rover collided with a truck, causing it to roll onto its side. Authorities noted he was driving at a high speed and showed signs of impairment, although no injuries were reported. The truck's driver and another person assisted Woods in exiting the vehicle through the passenger side, with damage to the truck estimated at $5,000.

During a field sobriety test, deputies noted Woods limping and wearing a compression sock on his right knee. He informed officers of his history of multiple surgeries, including seven on his back and over 20 on his leg, explaining that his ankle could seize up while walking. The report also mentioned that Woods was hiccupping during questioning and struggled to keep his head steady during parts of the sobriety test, requiring repeated instructions from the deputies. One deputy stated, "Based on my observations of Woods, how he performed the exercises and based on my training, knowledge, and experience, I believed that Woods’ normal faculties were impaired, and he was unable to safely operate the motor vehicle."

Woods consented to a breathalyser test, which indicated no alcohol presence, but he declined to provide a urine sample. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and later released on bail after several hours. He faces charges of DUI, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test, with a court appearance scheduled for April 23. Current online court records do not indicate legal representation. At 50 years old, Woods is a significant figure in golf, having made history as the first Black player to win the Masters in 1997. His career has been marred by injuries, including those from a severe car accident in 2021 that significantly impacted his right leg. A recent change in Florida law classifies refusal to submit to a breath, blood, or urine test as a misdemeanour, even for first-time offenders.
