Thomas Partey Denied Visa for World Cup Match Against Panama
FIFA World Cup 2026 Update
In a recent development regarding the FIFA World Cup 2026, Ghana's prominent midfielder, Thomas Partey, will not participate in his team's opening match against Panama due to a visa denial from Canada. This information was confirmed by FIFA on Friday.
Currently, Partey is training with the Ghanaian squad at their main camp located in Boston, USA. He was expected to join his teammates for the match in Canada, but FIFA has announced that he will be unable to play due to the Canadian government's refusal to grant him entry. FIFA President Gianni Infantino previously indicated that they would not intervene in visa issues with the US government, and FIFA has not commented on Canada's decision.
Reasons Behind Visa Denial
The Canadian authorities have not provided a specific explanation for the rejection of Partey's visa application. However, there is widespread speculation that the denial may be linked to the ongoing allegations of rape and sexual assault against him in England. Partey has firmly denied these accusations and is currently out on bail as he navigates the legal proceedings.
The hearing for his case at Southwark Crown Court was initially set for later this year but has been postponed to June 8, 2027. Until then, Partey remains on conditional bail but is required to appear in court on October 2 of this year.
Future Matches for Partey
Despite missing the match against Panama, Partey is expected to participate in Ghana's remaining two group stage games in the World Cup, as both will take place in the USA. Ghana is scheduled to face England in Boston and Croatia in Philadelphia.
The Ghanaian team remains optimistic about their chances against Panama, expressing relief that Partey will be available for the more challenging matches against England and Croatia.
