Texas GOP Convention Features Elephant, Creates Viral Moment
A Memorable Moment at the Texas GOP Convention
During the Texas Republican Party's 2026 state convention in Houston, an elephant named Page was introduced to symbolize unity. However, the event took an unexpected turn when the elephant relieved itself near the press area shortly after entering the George R. Brown Convention Center, eliciting laughter and surprise from both journalists and attendees.

Footage shared online captured the elephant parading through the convention hall adorned with a red, white, and blue feathered headpiece, while holding a sign that read "UNITY DRIVES VICTORY," the theme for this year's gathering. As Page walked past reporters, it unexpectedly urinated on the floor, prompting one handler to exclaim, "Oh, shoot." New York Times journalist Lauren McGaughy was among those present during the incident, which quickly became a hot topic among attendees and media covering the event. Texas Monthly's senior writer Robert Downen humorously noted on Bluesky, "It smells like piss in here."
Governor Abbott's Surprise Announcement
The elephant's entrance coincided with a speech by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who had hinted at a significant surprise while addressing party members. Abbott introduced Page to emphasize the need for Republican unity ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, aiming to reinforce the convention's core message amidst ongoing political strife.
Party Challenges Highlighted
The elephant's presence held added meaning given the internal conflicts that surfaced during the convention. Just a day prior, Texas GOP chairman Abraham George was removed from his position by D'rinda Randall, his former running mate, revealing fractures within the party even as leaders attempted to unite Republicans around a shared goal. For the organizers, the elephant was intended to symbolize that "unity drives victory."
