Tensions Rise in the Gulf: Trump Calls for Coalition Amid Drone Strikes
Escalating Tensions in the Gulf Region
In Dubai, US President Donald Trump has urged seven nations to deploy warships to ensure the safety of the Strait of Hormuz, as Iranian attacks on Gulf nations intensified early Monday.
Operations at Dubai International Airport, recognized as the busiest airport globally, were halted following a drone strike that ignited a fire in a fuel tank. Fortunately, the fire was swiftly controlled, and there were no reported injuries.
Iran has accused the US of utilizing 'ports, docks, and hideouts' in the UAE to conduct strikes on Kharg Island, which is crucial for Iran's oil exports, although no evidence has been provided. This has contributed to a surge in oil prices.
Trump mentioned that the US is in discussions with countries that heavily depend on Middle Eastern oil to form a coalition aimed at securing the waterway that typically sees about 20% of the world's oil trade, but he did not disclose the names of these nations.
In a related development, Israeli airstrikes have exacerbated the humanitarian situation in Lebanon, resulting in over 850 fatalities and displacing more than 850,000 individuals.
Drone Attacks Reported in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia reported intercepting three drones over Riyadh and its oil-rich western region on Monday morning, with no casualties or damage noted.
The Saudi Defence Ministry indicated that over 60 drones targeted the nation within a short span.
Flight Operations Resume at Dubai Airport
Officials from the UAE have announced a gradual resumption of flights at Dubai International Airport following the drone incident.
The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that flights to select destinations are now operational, as reported by the Dubai Media Office.
Emirates airline has also resumed limited operations at the airport after the drone strike caused a temporary halt in flights.
Brent Crude Prices Surge
Brent crude oil prices are hovering around USD 105 per barrel on Monday, with a slight increase of 1.6% to USD 104.73, after initially opening above USD 106. This marks a rise of over 40% since the onset of the conflict.
