A new exchange of heated statements has emerged between the United States and Iran following the Iranian foreign ministry's dismissal of US President Donald Trump's assertion that Iran had requested a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict. Esmail Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran's foreign ministry, labeled Trump's claims as 'false and baseless,' as reported by state media and corroborated by international news outlets. The dispute ignited after Trump alleged that Iran's leadership had reached out to the US for a ceasefire. In a post on Truth Social, he stated that Iran's 'new regime president' had sought an end to hostilities, adding that the US would only entertain the proposal if the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz was reopened. Trump further indicated that US military actions would persist until their conditions were satisfied, suggesting that any cessation of hostilities would be conditional and tactical rather than immediate.
Tehran quickly countered these claims, asserting that no such request for a ceasefire had been made, directly opposing the narrative presented by the US president. Additionally, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz remains 'firmly under control' and cautioned that it would not be opened under pressure from adversaries.

The Iranian Consulate General in Mumbai took to social media to ridicule President Trump's comments regarding Iran's leadership, labeling them as inaccurate. In a pointed response shared on X, the consulate remarked, 'On April Fools’ Day, it’s almost poetic that Donald #Trump still manages to outdo the jokes; talking about a ‘new’ #Iran #president when Dr. #Pezeshkian has been in office all along.' They added, 'Reality check: presidents aren’t replaced by tweets… that’s what elections are for.'
This reaction followed Trump's assertion on social media that Iran had a 'new regime president' seeking a ceasefire. Trump stated, 'Iran’s New Regime President, much less Radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE! We will consider when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!! President DJT.'
It remains unclear who Trump was referencing, as Iran continues to have the same president. Previously, Trump had mentioned that he could potentially end the conflict within two to three weeks if he was assured that Iran would not pursue nuclear weapons, even in the absence of a formal ceasefire.
