Tejaswin Shankar Slips to Third in Decathlon at Asian Games

Tejaswin's Decathlon Performance

Indian athlete Tejaswin Shankar experienced a drop from first to third place after the discus throw event in the decathlon at the Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya on Sunday. Before this event, he was leading the decathlon standings, having secured third place in the 110m hurdles heat with a time of 14.33 seconds, earning 932 points.

Tejaswin's Decathlon Journey

Initially, Tejaswin was in a strong position with 5,270 points, poised for a gold medal. However, during the discus throw, he managed only a third-place finish with a best throw of 36.77 meters, falling short of his personal best by four meters. As a result, his total points decreased to 5,869, placing him in third position, while athletes from China and Japan took the lead. The upcoming events, pole vault and javelin throw, are not considered Tejaswin's strongest disciplines.

Athletics

In the women's marathon race walk, Manju Rani had a disappointing performance, finishing sixth with a time of 3:40:17. Additionally, Priyanka Goswami was disqualified after reaching the 9 km mark.

Surfing

In surfing, Sivaraj Babu progressed to the third round of the men's shortboard event, defeating Iran's Davoud Khadir with a score of 8.96 (4.83 + 4.13 from two waves). He will be joined in the third round by fellow Indian Kishore Kumar, as all four Indian surfers in both the men's and women's shortboard events have advanced.

Earlier, Sugar Shanti Gayen and Kamali Prakash also reached the third round. Sugar Shanti triumphed over Chen Wan-yu from Chinese Taipei with a score of 7.33, achieving 3.83 points on her first wave and 3.50 on her second. Meanwhile, Kamali Prakash defeated Singapore's Camille Marie Spaccarotella, scoring 7.57, with her first wave earning 4.17 points and her second wave 3.40 points, while her opponent scored 4.50.
