Teen Arrested in Baton Rouge Mall Shooting Incident
Shooting Incident at Mall of Louisiana
A 17-year-old named Markel Lee has been taken into custody following a tragic shooting at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge. According to law enforcement, Lee voluntarily surrendered and is currently being held at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison as the main suspect in this case.
Authorities have stated that Lee is facing severe charges, which include first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and one count of illegal weapon use. The incident occurred around 1:22 PM on Thursday in the food court area of the mall, resulting in injuries to six individuals, one of whom succumbed to their injuries.
The deceased has been identified as 17-year-old Martha Odom, a senior at Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette, who was at the mall with two classmates during the shooting.
Investigators report that the altercation began as a dispute between two groups that escalated into gunfire. While Lee is currently in custody, police are actively searching for another individual believed to be connected to the shooting. Additionally, officials confirmed that five people who were initially detained have been released. The mall remains closed as the investigation is ongoing, with authorities suggesting that further arrests may occur.
