Coach's Outrage Over VAR Decision

Murat Yakin, the head coach of Switzerland, expressed his frustration with the VAR protocol following his team's 3-1 extra-time loss to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026. He stated that the decision to send off Breel Embolo 'ruined' their chances in the match.

Key Moment in the Match

Switzerland made a commendable comeback after Alexis Mac Allister scored early for Argentina. Dan Ndoye equalized for Switzerland in the 67th minute, but the match took a critical turn just five minutes later. Embolo received a second yellow card for simulation after a lengthy VAR review, which overturned an initial booking for Argentina's Leandro Paredes. This left Switzerland with ten players for the rest of the match.

Yakin's Strong Critique of the Rules

"There was absolutely no justification for the yellow card," Yakin remarked. "It was a trivial incident, and the referee should have allowed play to continue. We were penalized by a rule that is simply unacceptable. I find it incomprehensible that they intervened in such a manner, which was deeply disappointing. This rule has no place in football and ultimately destroyed our game today. While we must accept the outcome, it is painful to lose in this fashion," he added.

Switzerland's Resilience Despite Setback

Despite being a player down, Switzerland held their ground against Argentina until Julian Alvarez scored a remarkable long-range goal in the 112th minute, giving Argentina the lead. Lautaro Martinez then sealed the victory with a third goal, propelling Argentina into the semi-finals against England. Yakin noted that his team had taken control of the match before the controversial red card altered its trajectory.

Team's Efforts Acknowledged

"I want to commend the entire team for their effort. Coming back from a goal down against the world champions showed our determination, and we were in control of the game," Yakin stated. "Unfortunately, we were penalized by an unacceptable rule. My players are the true heroes of this match," he concluded.

Players Voice Their Concerns

Midfielder Remo Freuler also expressed his confusion over the VAR decision, demanding clarity from FIFA. "I am incredibly proud of our team. We gave it our all," Freuler said. "I cannot comprehend how VAR could arrive at such a conclusion, and FIFA owes us an explanation."

Embolo's Emotional Departure

Breel Embolo, visibly upset after his dismissal, was comforted by teammates as he left the pitch. Yakin defended Embolo, stating he was not to blame for the loss. "He was fouled multiple times and had several impactful moments in the game, but unfortunately, he could not contribute further," Yakin explained. "I do not hold him responsible. It was a refereeing error that affected us significantly."

Reflecting on a Historic Journey

Although Switzerland did not reach the semi-finals, Yakin expressed pride in their journey, marking their first quarter-final appearance in the World Cup since 1954.
