Sunil Kumar: Aiming for Gold at the Asian Games and Beyond

Sunil Kumar, a competitor in the 87kg Greco-Roman wrestling category, began his wrestling journey in his village, unaware of the remarkable achievements that awaited him. Initially a personal endeavor, his passion evolved into a commitment to represent his country, a motivation that has fueled his career ever since.
"I started wrestling in my village, and at first, it was just a hobby. However, as I began to compete, I realized I wanted to achieve something for my country, not just for myself. That ambition has driven me throughout my career," Sunil shared in a statement from the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS).
Focus on Winning Gold at the Asian Games
As he approaches the Asian Games, Sunil stands out as one of India's most accomplished wrestlers, already holding a bronze medal from the 19th Asian Games. His current focus is clear: to secure a gold medal for India. To prepare, the Indian wrestling team recently trained in Uzbekistan, honing their skills alongside some of the region's top wrestlers, including reigning champions from the previous Games. "My primary goal is to win a gold medal for my country at the Asian Games. Everything I do is directed towards that objective. Our training camp in Uzbekistan was beneficial, as we trained with some exceptional Uzbek wrestlers, including gold medalists from 2022. This experience has motivated us all to improve," he stated.
Dealing with Injury Concerns
Sunil has faced his share of injuries, including knee surgery last year. He openly acknowledges that the fear of injury is a constant presence for wrestlers, regardless of their experience level. However, he believes that this fear is something athletes learn to manage rather than allow to hinder their performance. "Having undergone knee surgery, I understand the challenges of dealing with injuries. The fear of getting hurt is always in the back of your mind; no wrestler can claim otherwise. If injuries weren't part of this sport, anyone could do what we do. Everyone carries a bit of that fear; it's simply part of competing at this level," he explained.
Setting Sights on the Olympics
While the Asian Games are his immediate focus, Sunil is already planning for the future. Starting in 2027, he will shift his attention to Olympic qualification, with the years leading up to the Los Angeles Games shaping his long-term aspirations in wrestling. "After the Asian Games, I will begin my preparations for the Olympics in earnest from 2027, when the qualification events commence. That will be my next significant goal," he remarked.
Support from Inspire Institute of Sport
Sunil's recovery journey from knee surgery has been significantly influenced by the support he received from the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS). He credits the institute for providing him with access to excellent training facilities and consistent rehabilitation care, which ultimately helped him return stronger than before. "I received tremendous support from IIS during my rehabilitation. They provided me with access to a top-notch gym and ensured I had everything necessary for a proper recovery. Thanks to their assistance, my comeback was successful, and I felt stronger after rehabilitation than I did before my injury," he shared.
Staying Grounded Amidst Ambitions
As Sunil gears up for another Asian Games, he remains grounded by the support of his community and the responsibility he feels to make them proud. "With their blessings, I will meet their expectations. Ultimately, I seek the support of those who have stood by me. If they are with me, I am confident I can perform well. My sole focus right now is on winning a medal," Sunil concluded.
